The Gift of Sunshine: How Light, Vitamin D, and God’s Creation Can Support Your Mood, Mind, and Well-Being

Father God has blessed us with so many things that pertain to life and godliness. Second Peter 1:3 reminds us that His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness. When I think about that Scripture, I am reminded that some of God’s gifts are so present in our everyday lives that we can easily overlook them.

One of those gifts is sunshine.

Psalm 136:8 reminds us that Father God created “the sun to rule by day.” The sun provides light and warmth, helps sustain life on the earth, and even influences important processes within the human body.

Something as simple as stepping outside and feeling the sun's warmth on your skin can remind you of our Creator's intentionality.

Sunshine, Vitamin D, and Your Physical Health

When ultraviolet B (UVB) rays from sunlight reach exposed skin, they initiate a process that allows the body to produce vitamin D. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, which is essential for maintaining strong bones. Adequate vitamin D and calcium are especially important as we age because deficiencies can contribute to weakened bones and conditions such as osteomalacia and osteoporosis.

Vitamin D also plays important roles in normal muscle, nerve, and immune function.

How amazing is that?

Father God designed the human body with systems that interact with the environment He created. The sun in the sky and the intricate processes within our bodies remind me again of Psalm 139:14: we are fearfully and wonderfully made.

Sunshine, Your Mind, and Emotional Well-Being

The gift of daylight can also affect our mental and emotional well-being.

Light entering through our eyes sends important signals to the brain that help regulate our circadian rhythm, or internal body clock. Exposure to daytime light—particularly earlier in the day—helps the body recognize when it is time to be awake and active. In turn, a healthy day-night rhythm can support better sleep.

And we know how different life can feel after a good night's rest!

Research also continues to demonstrate an association between healthy daytime light exposure, sleep, mood, and emotional regulation. Daylight interacts with brain systems involved in alertness and mood, including pathways associated with serotonin.

This does not mean sunshine is a treatment for depression or anxiety. However, enjoying daylight as part of a healthy lifestyle can be one simple way to support our overall well-being.

Sometimes caring for ourselves does not have to be complicated.

Open the curtains.

Step outside.

Take a walk.

Sit on the porch.

Look at the sky.

Feel the warmth of the day and take a moment to thank Father God for another day He has made.

“This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” — Psalm 118:24

Sunshine Can Encourage Healthy Behaviors

There is something about a beautiful day that can encourage us to get moving.

Going outside may lead us to walk, garden, exercise, spend time with family, or simply sit quietly away from our screens. These activities can also benefit our physical and emotional well-being.

Sunshine may also create opportunities for connection. We may be more inclined to take a walk with a friend, visit a park, sit outside with family, or simply greet someone while enjoying the outdoors.

The sunshine itself doesn’t create our joy, but it can become part of an environment that encourages movement, connection, rest, gratitude, and reflection.

Let the Sunshine Remind You of the True Light

The physical sun is part of God's creation, but it also reminds me of something much greater: the One who created it.

The sun may illuminate our day, but the Lord Jesus is the Light of the World.

Jesus said in John 8:12:

“I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”

And Malachi 4:2 speaks beautifully of the Sun of Righteousness arising with healing in His wings.

When I see the morning light, I'm reminded that darkness does not last forever. A new day comes. His mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22–23).

The sunshine can warm my skin, but Jesus brings light to my spirit.

The sunshine can brighten my surroundings, but Jesus illuminates my path.

The sunshine eventually sets, but the Light of Christ never goes out.

Enjoy the Gift—With Wisdom

As with many things Father God has given us, wisdom and moderation matter.

Too much ultraviolet (UV) exposure can damage the skin and increase the risk of skin cancer. Enjoy being outdoors while also protecting your skin appropriately.

Consider:

  • Enjoying daylight and outdoor activities while seeking shade when the sun is intense.

  • Wearing protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses when appropriate.

  • Using broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher on exposed skin.

  • Avoiding intentional tanning and sunburn.

  • Talking with your healthcare provider if you are concerned about your vitamin D level rather than relying on prolonged sun exposure.

People differ in how efficiently their skin produces vitamin D based on factors such as skin pigmentation, age, season, geographic location, cloud cover, and other circumstances. No single amount of sun exposure is appropriate for everyone.

A Heart of Gratitude

The next time you step outside and feel the sunshine on your face, you can pause before rushing into the next thing.

Look up.

Take in the light.

Breathe.

Thank Father God for another day.

Thank Him for creating a body with remarkable systems that work together.

Thank Him for the warmth of the sun, the beauty of creation, and the ability to experience it.

And most importantly, allow the natural light to remind you of the true Light—the Lord Jesus Christ.

Father God prepared an environment to sustain Adam and Eve before He placed them in the Garden. Throughout creation, we see evidence of His provision, order, wisdom, and care (Genesis 1–2).

The gift of sunshine is another opportunity to stop and recognize the goodness of God that surrounds us every day.

Closing Reflection

Today, give Father God thanks for the gift of sunshine.

Let it encourage you to step outside, move your body, quiet your mind, and appreciate His creation. And as the light touches your surroundings, remember the One who is your everlasting Light.

The sun is His creation. Jesus is our Light.

“For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light we see light.” — Psalm 36:9
